Stores as Destinations: What Seoul and Bangkok Show About Physical Retail
Haus Nowhere in Seoul and Pop Mart's Bangkok flagship both gave shoppers a reason to visit in person in 2025. Websites and cross-border shopping cannot replace that channel.

- Gentle Monster's Haus Nowhere Seoul opened in September 2025: 14 floors and 30,700 square meters of total floor area, housing installations, retail and brands including a fragrance label and a dessert brand.
- Pop Mart's Bangkok flagship covers 760 square meters and centers on a four-meter-tall Molly dressed in traditional Thai clothing.
- Both stores give shoppers a reason to come in person, built through space and visuals that websites and cheaper channels cannot replace.
When shoppers can buy online, or cross a border to buy more cheaply, a physical store needs a new reason to exist. Two of the most discussed stores in Asia in 2025 gave the same answer: make the store itself the destination.
Seoul: why is Haus Nowhere a brand building?
According to a September 2025 report in the English edition of the Korea JoongAng Daily, Gentle Monster's parent company, IICombined, built its new headquarters in Seongsu-dong, Seoul. Across 14 floors it houses eyewear, the fragrance brand Tamburins, the dessert brand Nudake and other label brands. Outdoor installations and themed zones on each floor give visitors a reason to make the trip, take photos and share them.
The same report notes that eyewear has to be tried on in person, and sizes and styles do not vary much. For a product like this, the store carries both brand image and sales. The report cites overseas revenue at roughly 40% of the company's total.
Bangkok: why does a global character wear local clothing?
According to an Inside Retail report in November 2025, Pop Mart's flagship at ICONSIAM in Bangkok is organized around three design themes: Thai water culture, traditional architecture and inclusiveness. Interior lines are drawn from the river. The store includes Pop Mart's first café area outside China, developed with the Thai brand Greyhound Café.
The same Molly, dressed in Thai clothing, becomes an image that exists only in Bangkok. In the report, Pop Mart International President Justin Moon says immersive physical stores remain essential.
What do stores worth a special trip have in common?
The two stores differ in scale, category and market, but they share three approaches. First, a main visual that people remember. Second, a visual connected to local culture. Third, a reason to stay beyond buying, such as a tea room or a café area.
Where does the problem lie for small and mid-sized brands, and where can they start?
Most brands do not have the budget to build a tower, so experiential retail can seem unrelated to them. The problem is equating "destination" with scale. The real core of both cases is one clear main visual.
The starting point is a single location: a window, an entrance, or one display point in the store. Use a visual connected to the local culture so that shoppers want to photograph it and walk in.
Turning a brand visual into products, experience and a clear purchase path is the core of the ArsRes Academy Visual Commerce Lab course.
